Price Competition , Business Hours , and Shopping Time Flexibility ∗ Oz Shy

چکیده

We analyze differentiated retail industries where shops engage in two-stage competition with respect to opening hours and prices. We explore the effects of consumers’ shopping time flexibility by comparing bi-directional consumers with forwardor backward-oriented consumers, who can either postpone or advance their shopping, but not both. We demonstrate that retailers with longer opening hours charge higher prices and that opening hour differentiation softens price competition. We calculate both symmetric and asymmetric subgame perfect equilibria in closing hours and demonstrate how the equilibrium configurations depend on the cost increases associated with extended business hours, as well as the relative densities of day and night shoppers.

Service Hours With Asymmetric Distributions of Ideal Service Time∗

We show that private provision of service hours will be inefficiently low from a social point of view independently of the market structure. We study how asymmetric distributions of ideal service time impact on this market failure. We establish that the time gap between any two opening and closing hours in an oligopoly equilibrium is constant and that this time gap increases if the distribution...

Competitive Reasons for the Name-Your-Own-Price Channel

This paper shows that the Name-Your-Own-Price (NYOP) business model can help soften competition. When consumers differ in their frictional costs (i.e., the shopping hassle) they experience when bidding at a NYOP retailer, the NYOP format can be a mechanism for differentiating a retailer from a posted-price rival. Beyond providing a motivation for using a NYOP mechanism, competition also has imp...
